do the haggle

If there’s one thing I realized when we were in Mong Kok then it would be that I am so not into haggling. :hide: I really don’t have anything against the haggling deed itself. But rather, I've always believed that when you sell something, you sell it at a suitable price. That means you’re selling it for what it is worth. So I find it a little insulting to haggle for items. However, if you’re doing business and you let people haggle for your items then you should probably start at a very high price to make hagglers/buyers think they ridiculously got a good bargain. I think that's a little silly. Well, that’s just me saying without the fun. Because, well, haggling can be fun. =)

We haggled primarily for souvenir items such as ref magnets, HK shirts, etc. It was actually my sister who did the haggling for me because I was so bad at it. My husband even thinks so. Lol! Anyway, during our short trip there, the following are a few things I’ve noticed:

• Mong Kok Night Market doesn’t exclusively open at "night" time. The first time we visited Mong Kok was at night time. This was because we thought it was supposed to only happen at night. Hihi. But on that first visit, we found out that they actually open at 11am and close at 11pm. So when we came back the second time, it was early afternoon.

• It may be silly to say this, but yes, you can really get a good bargain. Well, we bought ref magnets (the ones with HK landmark designs) for HK$8 each. The same pieces were sold in Kowloon stores at HK$15 and in the airport at HK $35.

• If you’re into serious shopping and haggling, it may not be wise to bring the kids along. You know kids. Haha. The tendency is kids become stubborn at getting the stuff they want asap and so sellers become stubborn they won’t let you haggle. Lol! This really happened to Khandi. She saw a princess–design pencil case and it was ridiculously (to me) priced at HK$85. I tried to haggle but the seller was not giving in and I was determined not to give in to her and the then–having–tantrums Khandikins. I went around (without Khandi this time) searching for that same item. Unfortunately, there wasn’t. But I sort of knew we can always find the same kind of item here in Cebu. Besides, she has that same kind of pencil case but with a different design. So the item wasn’t really a to–die–for. Hehe. What I did was search for another item that I knew Khandi would love (hello, Pokemon shirt! Lol!) and haggled for it at HK$ 35 (that was the best I could do.) And that ended the pencil case struggle. Hihi.

• Don’t haggle on an item with all your might if you’re really not going to buy it. Well, we didn’t really do this, but we’ve been warned. The sellers would get furious. And honestly, when we got to the market, I sort of got the feeling it’d be true. :hide:

• Don’t haggle, leave, and come back (thinking you’d still get the same deal).
This is because you may not get the same kind of “low” with the price when you come back. =P

you are not alone. i don't know how to haggle either.

it looks like you did a lot of shopping. and mongkok is the right place to do that. i heard china has a big mall that is cheaper than the night market prices but adventure siguro to get there. (problema pa how to communicate)
